I don't see the card in question you are talking about . Have you tried uploading the image / scan to your post here in the Forum ?

Gebuhr Bezahlt simply means cash paid as I think you now know. Although Osnabrueck was in the British Occupied Zone it is quite possible that the post office did not always have ample supplies of stamps and so a cash paid cancel was applied. I honestly don't know cash payments was the normal thing for bulk mailings at this time.

The text you quote , " Frage Rechnung vom 31.8.44 und 10.9.44 und 25.9.44" is someone quering their invoice from the mentioned dates. "Rechnung" is an invoice.
Well done also on at least trying to speak some German here. Of course you will make mistakes and no German speaker expects your German to be perfect. But by at least attempting the language you are showing an eagerness to learn and that will I think do you no harm.

Hi Tony,

Yes many here can understand English although there are only two here who are native English speakers other than yourself. So although English is widely understood it is not always easy for our German friends to reply in English in a way that can be perfectly understood. Most like to reply in another language only when they are confident it is understandable.

My German is far from perfect but I try to speak and write in the boards native language and so make myself understood.

To post an image directly to a message on the board you do the following,

1. Click the Antwort button.
2. Type your text as you would in a reply.
3. Once the text is completed at the bottom of the message box you will see three small box's with a) Optionen , b) Dateianhange and c ) Erweitererter Editor.
4. To add an image click on Dateianhange ( data attachment)
5. Click Browse.
6. Find the image on your PC you want to share and Click OPEN.
7. Then click SPEICHERN ( save image)
8. Click SCHLIESSEN ( close window)
9. You won't see the image until AFTER you have posted the text message.

If you have made a mistake don't worry use the Erweiterter Editor button to edit any mistakes.

My reply about the rechnung and why it was sent cash paid is only a guess. A picture will for sure enable someone to give you a more definate answer.

Firstly it is Geschäftspost (Business mail) and not Gesellschafts Post (society mail).

Osnabrück belonged to the RPD Bremen. The earliest date recorded for stamps from the

RPD Bremen is 1.7.45.

Geschäftspapiere (business post) was first permitted in the RPD Bremen from 26.4.46, and had to be marked as such with this word. So therefore your card will have travelled as Printed Matter (Drucksache) which was first permitted from 24.10.45.

In the British Zone both the British and American printings of Ampost stamps were used. However not everywhere could be supplied. There are a variety of reasons for this, not least of which was the German infrastructure which had suffered considerably after the attentions of the RAF/USAAF.

Generally where the Allies made no provision for regulation, either the Germans did nothing until they were told how to, or, and this applies particurlarly to the postal service, they simply took recourse to the old pre-war postal regulations. Largely where the Germans exercised their own discretion to expedite the mail, the Allies did not intervene. They wanted the country up and running as quickly as possible.

Under the old regulations there was provision for dealing with large amounts of what really simply is 'junk mail'.

In the initial period following the introduction of the Ampost stamps the number that people were permitted to purchase was limited. (although today you would find that hard to believe, given the surviving number of them in mint condition).

To this end and to comply with the rationing of stamps to the general public, they will have resorted to 'cash paid franking' (Gebühr bezahlt).

The card is quite likely marked 'Deutsch Geschäftlich'.
