Hello,

I do not understand French, only know:

SAUMUR to Paris, postmark type 15, June 3rd, 1842

SAUMUR to Nantes, postmark type 12, December 51834

The 2 question:

What do other French words mean?

On the envelope, the handwritten number "V 9" and "u 8" are the postage for the payment? Is the postage, the letter person to pay, or the recipient to pay?

Postmark type 12 and postmark type 15, I want to know that they are used, and need a link to introduce them

Hello,

The text on both envelopes consists only of the respective addresses.

The first is addressed to Mr A. Desmartains, lawyer, 12, rue de la Chaussée d'Antin, Paris. (That is still a major street in Paris today.)

The second one is addressed to Mr A. Viot, shipowner, Nantes. There is an abbreviated word after Viot which I cannot read. Armateur is a shipowner in English, "Reeder" in German. Nantes is a major French port.

As to the V 9 u 8 indications, I have no clue, but it would have been normal (before stamps were introduced) for the addressee to pay the postage. The typewritten text below both envelopes indicates a postage fee of 8 décimes = 80 centimes.

I am just looking at this old thread once more and wondered why I could not read the word before “Armateur” at the time. It is the abbreviation of “Négociant”, meaning “merchant”. It’s never too late to complete an answer.
