many of the germania issues offer plate vars ... some of which are detailed in michel specialised ...
however, I find many with plate errors ... does anyone know of a study on plates 10x10 ??
this would allow positional identifications...

The Arge Germania has lists of plate flaws.
However your question somewhat simplifies what is quite a complicated series of issues.
1900 Reichpost
1902 Deutsches Reich w/o watermark
1905 Deutsches Reich w. watermark (peacetime printings)
1915 Deutsches Reich w. watermark (wartime printings)
1916 Deutsches Reich (supplementary issues)
1920 Deutsches Reich (colours changed)
Ignoring the last issue comparison both for flaws and shades must be made with stamps of the same value within the same issue.
A mistake that many collectors make, and not just abroad, but also within Germany as well. Shade differentiation is further complicated by being defined from a colour tree (Farbbaum). This is something that many outside of Germany struggle with. So dismiss notions of dark to light or vice versa.
Several books are available.
Germania Jaschke-Lantelme (now out of print, but crops up on Ebay from time to time, expect to pay around €50+)
The 1920 series is the subject of three books available from Infla Berlin.
Vol (Band)66-1, Vol. (Band)66-2, and Vol (Band)66-3, the last is not yet published, however should appear early next year
Plattenfehler der Reichspost Ausgabe, this too is out of print, but gaining a copy should not prove too dificult.
Aside from Ebay, consider searching Amazon, and also abebooks. The last often turns up trumps, and is not always expensive.
Another point to note, flaws are not always flaws, the Germans differentiating between Plattenfehler (regularly occurring flaws) and Druckzufälligkeiten (flaws occurring by happenstance/chance), many of the"flaws" you will have found; nicks, dings, breaks, scratches, blots, spots, etc. are ascribed to the latter category, and thus have no catalogue status neither in Michel nor the specialised literature of the Arge.
There is within the webpages here a Datenbank, a good number of the pages concern themselves with the Germania issues.
Consider also where there are also knowledgable people to assist with answers in addition to those found here.
