    Hello everyone,

I'm an Italian collector who is looking for starting a new collection on Infla period stamps. I've just bought a Michel spezial catalog but unlikly my german is really poor :oneien: .... I'd like to know if there are some list of the translation in english of the main term used in the catalog. I've just looked at http://australianphilately.com/german but i need a more exaustive list.

    Thanks in advance

    Francesco ;)

    Hello francesco,

in the Michel-catalogues from Europe you can find a translation list of the most important Philatelic words also in English, but not in Italien.

You can also find a lot of translations in Philatelic words, also from German in Italian in the following links:

    I hope, you are successful.

    Regards, kartenhai

    Hello kartenhai

Unluckly most of the online translator and list are unusefull because most of my unknown words are composed.
    For example

    Walzendrucke = ?

Oberrandstucke = Stamps with the superior label?

The above site is "live", that means should you not find what you are looking for, you can email the website owners, the word will be translated and added to the list for future reference.

    kind regards

    Hi Franceso,

Firstly welcome to Philaforum. Here you will find several serious and very knowledgable collectors of the inflation period. Mr Infla who is also from Italy is a member here who can maybe help you with some things.

Please ask any questions you may have about any aspect of Infla and I'm sure someone can help.

Having the Michel spezial is just the start of many things you should try and learn about this area of collecting. Mostly the information is available in German only, and is published by the Arge Infla-Berlin. But some of their literature is very easy to understand even for non German speakers. Such as the Infla Band 13 Falsch Stempel (forged cancels).

There is also a very good book in English by Gerhard Binder called, Hyper-Inflation in Germany 1923. Postal history and list of rates from 1906-1923 which I highly recommend you try and obtain. This explains the background to inflation, explains how the postage rates were calculated and lists all the rates in English. With many more rates shown than those seen in Michel.

    Best wishes,
    Alec.

    Hi,
    what about
"MICHEL GERMANY Specialized 2007" (= Vol. 1, up to 1945) in colour
which has all the translation work re. catalog terms already done:

"This catalogue mainly aims at the English speaking market; it contains the following collecting areas from volume 1 of the Germany Specialized Catalogue: North German Confederation, German Empire, German Foreign Post Offices, German Colonies, Free City of Danzig, Memel Territory, Bohemia and Moravia, War and Propaganda Forgeries."
    ISBN 3-87858-150-5

Vol. 2 with WWII and its aftermath (German occupation issues, allied occupation of Germany ec.) followed in 2009.

    regards

    Hello Francesco,
    welcome to the forum.
Can I recommend for novices this text:
Dizionario Filatelico Tede-Ital., Ital-Tedd. di Vanni Alfani, ed. Vaccari.

But remember that this type of collection must over time needs to know the German language, otherwise you can not decipher the specialized texts.
