Hi, I am a collector of Bavarian stamps and would like to ask if you know of any websites about Bavarian stamps in English. Unfortunatelly, I don't speak German.
Bavarian stamps websites in English?

Hi there
As a member of the board of a Bavarian philatelic society, I am well informed, but have as yet not found an english homepage for Bavarian stamps and postal history in the web.
When you have questions about philatelic material from 1806 till the end of the bavarian stamps in 1920 you are wellcome to post details in this forum, where a couple of collectors will do their very best to answer your questions.
I´d very happy to help you.
Yours sincerely

Hi bayern klassisch,
Before I posted here, I had an idea of creating a website about Bavarian stamps in English, so I wanted to check first if such websites already exist.
There are many collectors of Bavarian stamps around the world and I doubt that all of them speak German, yet good literature in English is not available. (At least I am not aware of it) On the other hand, learning German is not the easiest thing in the world.
I'll soon post here about my "Bavarian stamps in English website" idea in depth.
Thank you so much for your offer to help.
Best regards,
Alex -
I´d be happy if there were a homepage for collectors of the Bavarian postal history, stamps and letters in the internet.
I am sure that it won´t be easy, as Bavaria is quite multifaceted, and only very few know, how multifaceted it really is (it took me 30 years and I still find new things every month ...). You´ll never stop learning. Can´t wait, until your project starts.
Kind regards

That’s exactly my idea – to start. However, because my knowledge of Bavarian stamps is not immense, I can only start. I will need other people to join and make some contribution, those who are not only enthusiastic about Bavarian stamps, but who know about them more than I do.
In other words, I was thinking of creating a basic website with some good stories about Bavarian stamps and inviting Bavarian stamp experts to write their own topics that I can add to the website. So, you and other experts are welcome to join me in my endeavour.
Without other people’s contribution, the website maintained by me only, could be only short-lived, because I am not an expert, so I can’t really teach others on Bavarian stamps, not to mention postal history.
However, I believe that Bavarian stamp experts will find this idea interesting and will be glad to join, so we can keep the website “work in progress” for a long time.
Thank you so much on your support so far.
Best regards,
Alex -
After having read what you wrote I think it could be a good thing to do it bilingually English and German. Do you think that might be possible?
So we could give almoust every collector in the world the possibility to understand and to participate.Yours

Where do you live?

Bilingual site would be possible. I didn't think of it initially because there are many websites on Bavarian stamps (also many books printed) in German. There are even entire books scanned available on the internet. There's hardly anything available in English.

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your support and offer to help. If there are so many people able and willing I better come up with some website soon.
It will be a new experience for me, so I can't tell how soon I'll have the site available for others.
Thanks again and regards,

Hello Alex K,
I was wondering where you live since you did not include this information in your profile and I live in the US.
I am not sure how much I can help with your project, but I would think that a wealth of information on Bavaria in english is available from the U.S. based Germany Philatelic Society.
There even is a Bavaria specialist group. These might be the right people to partner up with to get some English language content for your prospective Bavaria stamps website.
-
Hi Carolina Pegleg,
I had a look at the webiste and I don't think they, as a society, would like to partner with me. That's because I'd like people to be able to get plenty of information about stamps with no obligation to pay for it, whilst looking at their website, the society charges for any information about stamps (more precisely, about forgeries). In fact, I didn't see anything about any stamps on their website whatsoever.
It could be that some members of the society would like to contribute to what I'd like to achieve.
Seems that I must make clear that I don't do this for profit.
Could you please help me to make contact with their Bavaria specialist group members?
My email address is available in the forum, so I can receive private messages.Kind regards,
Alex -
Hi Alex,
The Germany Philatelic Society website forgeries you speak of are a set of CD's that they have for sale. So it's not a case of collectors having to pay to receive any information from them.
I would try contacting the GPS President a Mr Jason Manchester and see what he can do to help. His e-mail can be found via the GPS web site.
If you seriousy want to collect Germany and are a non German speaker then joining such a society as the GPS in the USA or the Germany and Colonies Philatelic Society in the UK would I think give you access to a lot of information. Both societies will have philatelic libraries and I'm sure have information written in English. Members living in those countries can borrow such reference books, so assuming you live either in the UK or the USA that could be one way for you to make contact with other like minded English speaking collectors.
Believe me there are many non German speaking collectors out there and many are specialists in their own collecting areas and no doubt a few are collectors of Bavaria.
I wish you every success in constructing the website and as Nigel stated you will find help available from many here as and when they can.
I wish I knew how to construct a website and then I'd have a site dedicated to my own collecting area, (hyper-inflation). But that is something for the future.
Best wishes,
Alec. -
@ Alex K
Well, I am not a member of this association. I don't even consider myself a very active collector of German stamps exept for some postal history aspects.
You said you were looking for English language information on Bavaria and, thus, I thought, this could be a match. If have no idea whether the association as such can help you out, but I know that US collectors tend to be friendly people.

infla-alec I wish I knew how to construct a website
Hi Alec, I wish I knew how to make CMS website (that's what I'd like to make) myself, because the site would be finished by now. It wouldn't take a weekend to someone with right skills, however it may take me couple of months because I yet have to learn how to do it. Once I finish, I'll think how to pass it to you, because the site will be generic, so you can use a copy of it to fill it with inflation stamps content, or anything else.

Thanks so much for the address, i'll contact them.
