I have been studying these definitives since approximately 1993. I find them to be very challenging to study, given the gaps in knowledge missing even from the most advanced Argentinean specialized catalogs-e.g. Klass 1970 and Kneitschel 1951.

I hope some of the members of this forum enjoy looking at these stamps, and even maybe collecting them/studying them:

Here are the papers as I currently understand them. There are a few gaps in my current study of these...the numbering scheme is my own given that there is no published scheme that addresses the papers correctly/completely.

    (01) 1E1: The first early paper with wavy lines from October 1935, which I find in use thrroughout 1936.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/issue-pages/5P/007-300t-wmk1E.jpg]

    (02) 1E2: Mostly used in 1937/38.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/papers/001622-1E2.jpg]

    (03) 1E3: Mostly used in 1939. At times easily confused with the 1E1 paper.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/papers/001635-1E3.jpg]

    (04) 1E4: Mostly used in 1940.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/papers/002495-1E5-tinyRA-350.jpg]

    (05) CL1A: The first clay papers from 1943. The watermark is similar to that of the 1E4 paper.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/foro/200805/004146-b.jpg]

    (06) CL1B: Watermark is perpendicular to the previous paper.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/foro/200805/CL1B-40c-dark-1943-700.jpg]

    (07) NGR: unwatermarked grid

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/issue-pages/20P/004-300t-3.jpg]

    (08) NOP: opaque, thick, unwatermarked, and uncatalogued. Easiest to distinguish for the high values (5, 10, and 20 pesos).

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/issue-pages/5P/008-300t-1-NOP-wmk-asis-equal.jpg]

    (09) 2C: RA straight rays; neat

    (10) 2D: RA straight rays; diffuse

    (11) 2N: RA straight rays; narrow features

    (12) CL2A: thin, plastic-like clay paper

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/foro/200805/10cBR-A-CL2A-3-b.jpg]

    (13) CL2B: thin, plastic-like clay paper, opaque and almost imposible to back scan!

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/foro/200805/scan0013-filter-700.jpg]

The five late papers from the 1950s

    (14) 1L1:

    (19) Official clay paper, similar to CL2A, thinner, and easy to back scan for the 50c, and slightly thick and with poor perforations for the 25c.

Such research is very important, despite or perhaps in spite of many years of collecting not everything is known. I would strongly suggest you publish your findings. There are trusts in both Germany and England that support such publications. If you are interested I can provide details.

    kind regards

Here is a link to a few covers with the previous definitive issue (San Martin), which was only possible between october 1, 1935 and the end of that year. The San Martin stamps were subsequently demonetized and the post office allowed their exchange for the new issue during the first 90 days of 1936.

This cover seems to be from October 1, 1935, which would make it a first day of use for the 5c Moreno.

I completed a study of this stamp as a test of what I need to do for all the others. This is one of the simpler stamps in that it had a limited run (all of 1936) and was printed on one paper (my 1E1, the cream medium thickness paper).

This stamp was issued January 1, 1936, and here is a cover from January 4.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/book01/000049-1PL-049-C-back.jpg]

This is the first paper (1E1):

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/issue-pages/1P/000056-1PL-056-M-wmk-350.jpg]

There are two catalogued plate varieties in Klass/Kneitschel:

long vertical line across argentina section of map

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/issue-pages/1P/000009-1PL-009-U-PV-long-scratch-det-350.jpg]

    retouched left numeral background

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/issue-pages/1P/000070-1PL-070-U-numeral-highres-det350.jpg]

there is an additional plate variety I find, and it seems to be in one of the master dies because I find two variations:

the most common has a broken curl midway along the right side edge,

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/book01/000067-1PL-067-U.jpg]

    here is a detail

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/book01/details/000067-1PL-067-U-dert.jpg]

the second variation also has a line break that I find in two separate specimens (one on cover).

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://www.somestamps.com/images-arg3551/reference-collection/book01/000055-1PL-055-M-PV-UL.jpg]

for those who can read Spanish, I also have scans of the three major catalogs for the regular issues and the officials in Kneitschel (the most authoritative source, it seems):

Here are two plate varieties that seem to come from the master dies. They are side by side on rows 2,4, and 6 of this block.

this is one of the harder stamps to type because of the dark color. The links show additional stamps.

These were apparently not printed on all of the four 1E papers. I do not find, for instance, a 10p1E2....

Some of these are the truly elusive first printing (20p1E1), and I do not find any with the 1E2 paper (taller, narrower RA).
