BONN (dpa-AFX) - Deutsche Post has issued its first stamp made of recycled paper. The "Flower Letter" motif from the "World of Letters" series was developed together with the British paper manufacturer Tullis Russell using 12.8 tons of 100% recycled paper, the company announced in Bonn. This saved resources such as wood, water and electricity and reduced CO2 emissions.
The 95-cent stamp, which can be used to frank standard letters and postcards, shows three flowers emerging from a letter. A green leaf is printed at the bottom right next to the year, where there is usually a euro symbol. This indicates the eco-characteristics of the stamp.
Different types of stamps
We are talking about the wet-adhesive variant, which is issued in an edition of 82.5 million. The self-adhesive version, on the other hand, which has a circulation of just under 600 million, is made of recycled paper. Swiss Post justifies this with the necessary product properties: These stamps contain a special adhesive coating that does not work well with recycled paper.
In the coming years, Swiss Post would like to launch more and more wet-adhesive stamps made of eco paper on the market and eventually switch completely to eco for this type of stamp. With self-adhesive stamps, however, everything will remain the same for the time being.
Swiss Post is taking an unusual approach with the new postage stamp. According to its own information, it is the first postal company in the world to plan a complete changeover of its wet-adhesive stamps to recycled paper. In response to an inquiry, Austrian Post states that it has not yet issued any stamps made from recycled paper and has no plans to do so./wdw/DP/stk
